Weekly Update

February 26, 2010 -- Tuesday evening, music students performed in the Rising Star Instrumentalist Concert for an intimate audience in the Rogers’ Building.

Exams are Wednesday through Friday next week. If you want to send a gift basket to your child to help lighten the stress of exam time, Peggy and Jess in Brewster’s Campus Store would be delighted to create a custom basket.

Saturday night students will warm up at the tropical nights semi-formal dance at the Wolfeboro Inn (7:45 – 11 p.m.). This annual event promises fun, food, lots of dancing, and the crowning of a king and queen. Throughout the weekend, students can watch the Olympics on the big screen in the Estabrook, and on Sunday the senior class will be baking and selling cookies as part of their continued fundraising efforts for the senior prom, team trip day, and class gift.

Sports Wrap Up
While a few winter teams are awaiting tournament bids this weekend, most teams will play their last contests of the season on Saturday. Two “friendly competition” events are also happening this weekend. Early this evening the girls’ jv ice hockey team takes on Brewster faculty and staff who play for the Wolfeboro She-Wolves women’s recreational team. Although some think otherwise, this game could go either way!

Tomorrow Brewster ski and snowboard team members will race down the local Abenaki ski hill giant slalom course – carrying a fire hose. Students will form teams of five and participate in the annual Firefighter’s Race, which raises funds for the local Adaptive Sports Program. At the finish line, racers will be treated to “firehouse” chili and tee shirts. Race time is 12 – 3 p.m.

The winter sports award assembly takes place next Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. in the Smith Center (for parents who might want to join us). Spring sports begin next week, which means a new line up of selections for intramural and recreational sports including volleyball, table tennis, indoor soccer, yoga, fitness, outdoor skills, and the always popular ultimate Frisbee. The interscholastic spring sports schedule should be posted by the end of next week.

Beggars and Thieves
The afternoon drama students have been in rehearsals for the spring opera production of Beggars and Thieves.

The plot centers on the antics of the philandering highwayman, Captain MacHeath, who is romantically entangled with many women but two in particular. One is Polly, whose double-dealing father, Peachum, acts as both a fence for stolen goods and a thief-catcher for those in his gang who don't produce enough. He gets more for their hanging reward than they deliver. The other woman is Lucy, daughter of the equally duplicitous jailor, Lockit, who is in cahoots with Peachum. Peachum's gang of shady and questionable characters is planning an elaborate heist on the Western Road on the outskirts of London. Their bumbling ways bring about an unexpected outcome. Read More and Cast List.

Beggars and Thieves runs April 14-17 at the Rogers’ Building on campus.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Faculty and Staff Appreciation is next weekend and that is all anyone seems to be talking about. Thank you again to those of you who have contributed a basket, a gift, your time! It is not too late to contribute. For those of you still interested, please go to our Appreciation page.
