Winnipesaukean Earns National Recognition for Design

May 2009 – Brewster Academy’s yearbook, the Winnipesaukean, has been recognized for excellence and featured in the 2009 Gotcha Covered Look Book. Published annually by Jostens, the Look Book features yearbook spreads and covers from across the country. The Gotcha Covered Look Book is a popular reference guide for yearbook advisers and staffs seeking creative design and coverage ideas, trends, and inspiration.

Last year's Winnipesaukean was created by a talented group of students from the Class of 2008 led by senior editors Brooke Webster of Wolfeboro, Jennifer White, Alison Waldorf, Laura Kingston, and Teraysa White, said Andrea Cooper, Brewster’s faculty yearbook advisor.

“We were excited to learn that our book had received recognition for the third year in a row,” Cooper said. “While the previous two covers had been chosen for the Look Book, a double-page spread was honored from the 2008 Winnipesaukean. The inspiration came from a large number of interesting photos that were taken when the Brewster community gathered for a day of winter activities at North Woods Camp in January. When we noticed the wide variety of winter head gear we decided to create a page to highlight the assortment of hats.”

The Winnipesaukean was one of only 435 yearbooks selected from thousands submitted to a panel of judges that included nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers.

“Yearbook staffers capture once-in-a-life-time stories that will be saved for decades,” said Gary Lundgren, Jostens senior program manager/education. “The yearbooks chosen for Jostens’ 2009 Gotcha Covered Look Book showcase advances in design, photography, and journalistic excellence that reflect the sophistication and significance of today’s yearbook programs.”

The first Brewster yearbook, known as the Senior Year Book, was published in 1921; in 1968, the yearbook was renamed the Winnipesaukean. It is the third consecutive year that the Winnipesaukean has received recogntion in the Look Book. In 2007 and 2006, the Winnipesaukean covers were featured.
