Moving Up Day
May 24, 2010 – Moving Up Day
kicked off 2010 Commencement celebrations today. Although
this honors and prizes ceremony took place in the Smith Center, following tradition,
students processed by class out of the Estabrook. The underclassmen
eventually lined both sides of the walkway from the Estabrook to the
Smith Center, creating a congratulatory runway for their senior and
postgraduate friends to walk through. Juniors then followed the Class
of 2010 into the Smith Center, followed by sophomores and finally
freshmen. Read More.

Celebrating Civil Rights on MLK Day
January 18, 2010 – The community gathered in Anderson Hall to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Doug Kiley, history department chair, addressed the community with an “open letter” to Dr. King, thanking him for his courage and for risking his life for basic civil rights. Trey Whitfield Memorial Lecture
January 19, 2010 – Todd Parola ’89 returned to campus as the guest speaker at the 21st annual Trey Whitfield ’89 Memorial Lecture. In his remarks, Parola, who was a friend and classmate of Trey’s, praised Trey’s parents, A.B. Whitfield and Janie Whitney, for arriving on campus and embracing the community immediately following the untimely death of their son. During a time when Whitfield and Whitney had to absorb and deal with the devastating loss, they wanted nothing more than to make sure Trey’s friends and the community he loved so much were cared for. Parola described how their courage would carry him through another devastating loss, that of this brother Jeffrey, killed in the line of duty as a Maine state trooper, years later. During this tragedy, Parola would help his family cope with the loss through an understanding that any death is also a time to celebrate a life regardless of how short-lived. Parola applauded Whitfield and Whitney and the Brewster community for continuing to honor and celebrate Trey Whitfield’s compassionate life.
Following Parola’s remarks, the beautiful voices of the Trey Whitfield School Choir once again filled Anderson Hall to the delight of all and the choir members (ages 8-14) energized and inspired with their spirited songs.
