- Brewster Welcomes The Human Race Machine
Brewster Academy hosted The Human Race Machine for one week in January. This unique diversity experience gives viewers the opportunity to envision themselves as a different race. Inside the machine, a camera captures the viewer’s image. The viewer then uses the morphing program to apply the facial characteristics of six different races: Asian, White, African, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Indian.
“The Human Race Machine will give each student the opportunity to challenge their perception of race; the fact is, that we all have superficial differences but are all the same under the skin,” said Director of Residence Life Jaime Laurent.
The Human Race Machine was part of a broader campus celebration of diversity at Brewster where students represent 17 countries and speak 10 languages. Student leaders will present a short program to the community that will include information and clips from the PBS documentary “Race: The Power of an Illusion.” Brewster also hosted a movie night where students attended a movie where ethnicity and race issues were the central themes.
“Throughout January students had a variety of activities, classroom discussions, and occasions to understand that there is more to race than meets the eye. The goal was to consider where the idea of race came from, how it takes hold in our mind, and why it matters,” Laurent said.
Brewster invited students from other Wolfeboro schools to visit campus and experience The Human Race Machine.
