Learning for a Lifetime

Learning with LaptopsThe best teachers are those who never stop learning. They take advantage of continuing education and professional development programs. They believe that there is always room for improvement and that no teacher ever gets to the point where they know everything.

Those are the kinds of teachers you’ll learn from at Brewster. They will instill in you a passion for lifelong learning because it’s something they do every day themselves.

Our teachers participate in numerous opportunities throughout the year to continue their own education. In addition to conferences and the Brewster Summer Institute, a six-week pre-service professional development program, our teachers participate in mentoring and ongoing school-sponsored faculty workshops, and are evaluated and rewarded based on student performance in their classrooms.

In addition to these professional development opportunities, all your teachers participate in a program of professional support, feedback, and evaluation that is like no other. The system begins with observations. Teachers are observed numerous times during the year to get feedback that is grounded in how they are using specific teaching practices to help you learn best. In addition to observations, students complete evaluation surveys on each of their teachers.  This provides invaluable information for the teacher about how they can better serve their students.  This, along with other student performance measures are used by teachers to set goals for their professional growth.  High professional standards like these translate into teachers who have great expertise in helping you maximize your learning.

Professional Development on Campus

Here's a sample of programs teachers have recently participated in on campus:

Stop Bullying Now
In early January faculty participated in a professional development workshop on bullying with Stan Davis. Davis is the author of Schools Where Every One Belongs: Practical Strategies to Prevent Bullying and Empowering Bystanders in Bullying Prevention. His trainings integrate research, practical experience, specific techniques, storytelling, and audience participation.

Davis’ work has been featured in the national media, including on a special “20/20” television report with John Stossel. Learn more about Stan at “stop bullying now.”

Meeting the Needs of all Learners
In November, Dr. Ann Helmus, a clinical neuropsychologist, came to campus to present on the topic scaffolding instruction to meet all learners. Faculty spent time actively participating in discussions about brain development and strategies for reaching the diverse abilities of all learners.

Dr. Helmus is director of Neuropsychology & Education Services for Children and Adolescents in Newton, Massachusetts. She specializes in evaluating children with learning and attentional disorders, as well as primary neurological disorders. In addition to assessing children, she also provides consultation and training to both public and private school systems. She frequently makes presentations to groups of parents, particularly on the topics of non-verbal learning disability and executive functioning.
