HOWL and Clearlakes Chorale

HOWL
In HOWL – an eclectic chorus – students rehearse, discuss, and perform choral repertoires of various genres including classical masterworks, indigenous world music, and popular styles. The chorus performs a cappella as well as with piano and assorted instrumental accompaniment. Students receive instruction in healthy vocal technique and desirable ensemble attributes: intonation, blend, balance, appropriate tone quality, and critical listening. This ensemble performs at different venues on and off campus, including at universities, local events, parent and alumni events, and even at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2008 HOWL performed the Lord Nelson Mass of Joseph Haydn with the New England Symphonic Ensemble at the renowned performance hall and in 2003 HOWL performed Gloria of Francis Poulenc at Carnegie Hall. For more information on HOWL, please e-mail director Andy Campbell.

Clearlakes Chorale
Clearlakes Chorale is the community chorus in Wolfeboro. It is comprised of 70 or so voices (including Brewster students and faculty) and performs two or three concerts a year of a "mostly classical" nature. Any student is welcome to join Clearlakes, which rehearses on Thursday evenings. For more information, please e-mail director Andy Campbell.

Past Performances

Rejoice in the Lamb

April 17, 2009 -- Brewster's HOWL chorus, Chamber Orchestra, and select soloists performed Rejoice in the Lamb during Spring Family Weekend. British composer Benjamin Britten created Rejoice in the Lamb in 1943 for the 50th anniversary of the consecration of St. Matthew’s Church in Northampton, England. Rejoice in the Lamb is a festival cantata for four soloists, SATB choir (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), and organ and is based on the poem Jubilate Agno by 18th century poet Christopher Smart.

Brewster's music director Andy Campbell orchestrated the organ part for Chamber Orchestra, and HOWL was the chorus. The soloists were soprano Molly Stripling, alto Hannah Mufson, tenor Rebecca Marisseau, and bass Zachary Baum.

A Sea Symphony

January 24, 2009 -- HOWL returned to the University of New Hampshire to perform with the UNH Concert Choir, the UNH Symphony Orchestra, and a few other New Hampshire high schools. The students rehearsed all day for the evening concert: "A Sea Symphony" by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the text from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass."

Make We Merry

December 16, 2008 -- The music department brought the community Make We Merry, a holiday concert on Tuesday, December 16 at Anderson Hall. The concert featured the HOWL chorus, Chamber Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and numerous solos. The collective and individual talent of all these performers was a delight for all who attended. Their beautiful music and voices left eveyone in the holiday spirit.

41 Brewster HOWLers Rock Carnegie Hall

April 8, 2008 -- To an almost sold-out house of 2,805 seats, HOWL and several other choruses from as far away as Alaska and Georgia performed the Lord Nelson Mass of Joseph Haydn with the New England Symphonic Ensemble at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The excellent singing of the chorus mixed with the acoustics and beauty of the hall transported the audience far away from the first shabby rehearsal on Saturday morning. At that time we really didn't know if we could pull off a successful concert. With three days of intense rehearsing under the firm but quirky baton of John Rutter, however, the groups pulled together to produce rich, uniform tones with good diction. It was a remarkable transformation over the days of their residency.
