Michelle Dodge
B.S., Environmental Studies, English, Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Michelle Dodge joins the Brewster faculty as the ninth grade science teacher. She was attracted to Brewster by the deep sense of community and the diversity of students that Brewster attracts.
“I believe that an interdisciplinary approach to education best engages students in the topics they learn. In teaching environmental science I strive to give the students the opportunity to discuss issues from several perspectives and integrate their interests and personal experience into their work.”
Prior to Brewster, Ms. Dodge worked for several seasons as a hutmaster with the Appalachian Mountain Club. The huts spread across a 56-mile range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and she worked at Lakes, Greenleaf, Mizpah, Zealand, and Lonesome Lake huts. Her job entailed hiking supplies to and from the hut, cooking, maintaining the systems, providing guest service and trail advice, selling merchandise, and doing search and rescues. She then worked as a one-to-one aide for an elementary student at John Fuller School in North Conway, New Hampshire, for five months. In the summer of 2008 she worked at the Advanced Studies Program at St. Paul's School where she helped in the ecology and crew programs.
Outside the classroom, Ms. Dodge, who is an experienced rower, will assist with the crew program. She rowed for four years at William Smith College where she was a member of the varsity team. In 2006-2007, she was named an ESPN Academic All-American. At the conclusion of her senior year in college, she rowed in the NCAA Championships. Ms. Dodge also rowed for St. Paul’s School while in high school.
In her spare time, Ms. Dodge loves hiking in the White Mountains, biking, Nordic skiing, traveling, reading, singing, and spending time with family. She lives in Sargent II where her husband Shamar Whyte is the community life parent. Mr. Whyte also is an English teacher at Brewster.
