The Equestrian Program began in 1986 as a club sport. Much like the Outdoor Skills Program, it was provided as an option for students who preferred to learn a life skill. By 1989, the sport had become so popular that it was necessary to offer during both the fall and spring. In response to the growing interest in the sport, the equestrian program became a competitive sport.
The program is adapted to meet the skills and experience of each individual student, offering challenges to both the novice and experienced rider. Some students start the program without having ever been on a horse. The students are taught basic safety and riding skills, as well as management and the correct use of equipment. More advanced riders are grouped according to their abilities. Guidelines are presented to move from one group to the next, and students are required to demonstrate mastery of their current level before advancing to the next group.
The spring 2006 program will be held at Cricket Lane Farm in Alton, NH.
