Many supporters from the Brewster Academy community witnessed a solid
4-1 win in the Bobcats' first home game of the season. Brewster jumped
on the scoreboard first with a beautiful, unassisted effort from Ridge Garbutt to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the period Pete Galasso won a clean face-off to Yegor Bezuglyy who found some iron but, ultimately, all net to make it 2-0. Carl Maltais-Beland,
earning the start, was sharp in the nets and controlled his rebounds to
keep Academie St. Louis off the board. In the second period, the
Academie team shook off their six hour bus legs and gave Brewster all
they could handle, as the period ended scoreless. In the third,
Academie was again relentless in their forecheck and efforts all over
the ice as they held the Brewster scoring chances to a minimum. Andrew Marks took over the goaltending duties and allowed only one screened shot to sneak by. Late in the third, Bezuglyy,
with a superb effort, beat the Academie goaltender to the puck and had
just enough room to sneak it into the net. A great goal, his third in
two games, as Brewster went up 3-1. With less than a minute to go, and
an empty Academie net, Emery Edmondson found his target (assisted by Ross Cree and Jeremy Vautour)
and the final buzzer sounded with a win for Brewster. To Academie St.
Louis: a well-coached team that never quit and was a pleasure to play
hockey against. Best of luck this season, Academie St. Louis, we'll see
you next year!

Brewster battled Procter last year to a 1-1-1 record and so the battle continues this season. The word was out that Proctor had a lot of offensive firepower and they didn't disappoint their fans, scoring nine goals in the contest. The first period saw two strong, evenly-matched teams battle to a 2-2 tie. Proctor was opportunistic, scoring mostly on rebounds and Brewster had the lead momentarily late in the first period, 2-1, but just couldn't solidify the defense. Proctor scored early in the second, and then the penalty bug hit the Bobcats again and Proctor converted on the powerplay to make it 4-2. The period ended with a 6-3 deficit for Brewster to overcome, but it was just too big a hole. Team defense and Team discipline continue to be areas in need of quick improvement. Highlights and earning PAWS included Ridge Garbutt's hat trick, Carl Maltais-Beland strong goaltending (stopping just about all of the first shot attempts), Freddie Tonsberg's improved play on the green line, and Jeremy Vautour's gutsy play on the blue line and finesse on the powerplay. Note: Yegor Bezuglyy, with three goals in two games heading into the Proctor contest, will be heading home to the Ukraine to tryout for his country's Under 20 National Team. What an honor! We will miss him but wish him all the best as he attempts to make the team and play in Paris, France in an international hockey tournament. Good luck, Yegor!! |

Host Berwick came out with a flurry and a strong skating first line to pepper the Brewster net in the first period. In goal for Brewster was Carl Maltais-Beland, and he was nothing short of spectacular, especially on the second and third rebound shots. Brewster hit several posts, too. Finally Brewster got on the board, took the lead 2-0, and never looked back. Most notable was Ridge Garbutt's super-patient goal, as he read the Berwick goalie's committal to the shot then toe-dragged the puck and ultimately slid the puck over the goal line as his was essentially behind the net. A superb goal! (Ridge would score his second hat trick in as many games before this one was over.) Brewster added a goal in the second period and ultimately came away with the 5-1 victory. PAWS : Carl Maltais-Beland [2], Jeremy Vautour, Chris Drakos, Anthony Maiuri, and JV call-up Mike Disbury. |

Brewster started off slowly in this contest, with a knuckler from the point by Breck Merritt to put Brewster on the board, and it was tied at 1-1 after one period. In the second, Brewster heated up and scored three unanswered goals to go up 4-1. The contest would end with a 5-1 victory, as Ridge Garbutt scored two unassisted goals, Riley and Breck Merritt each knotted one, and sophomore Chris Drakos earned his first varsity goal! Again, Brewster goaltending was solid as Maltais-Beland started his second game of the tourney. |

Brewster started post graduate Andrew Marks for this contest and he looked sharp from the opening buzzer. On his angles, and challenging the shooters all afternoon, he fought hard to see the puck and control his rebounds. He deserves the lion's share of the praise for the shutout, although Brewster's defensive corps has improved. Sophomore Brady Palmer and Junior Cade Vittum both earned more playing time and showed they belonged. Also on defense, Erick Mong moved up to the second powerplay unit and did the job as he has been strong positionally since the first scrimmage. A great tournament for the Bobcats to gain confidence and strengthen their D-zone game. Ridge Garbutt was an absolute standout on offense, and his linemates, Spencer Montgomery and Brian Hart, both played their best hockey of this young season. Brewster took the Berwick Academy Tournament trophy home for the third time in a row. Congratulations to the players for their hardwork! |

Brewster came out strong, scoring two goals in the first period and 2-0 advantage after one period. In the second period, the penalty bug plagued Brewster, as they took six penalties and only scored one goal, allowing BB&N to storm back and end up tied 3-3 after two periods. In the third, it was back and forth with Brewster throwing a lot of pucks at the opponents net, several hitting the post, but the score was deadlocked in regulation. In OT, Brewster again hit the post, and BB&N countered with a screen shot from the point that found its way into the back of the net. Brewster would have to learn discipline to be successful against quality opponents like BB&N, as the loss cost Brewster two points in the standings as well as an opportunity to repeat as tournament champions. The Bobcats came out slowly in the final contest of the tournament by skating to a two goal deficit in the first period but then woke up in the second. Brian Hart led the offense with two goals in one shift and that sparked Brewster. Eric Mong also drew a St. George's penalty, and then Jeremy Vautour ripped a wrist shot from the point on the power play. Brewster played all eight defensemen and ran four lines for a total "team victory." Special note would have to be Adam Guillmette, who really stepped up his game over this past weekend by taking the body and smartly moving the puck. Cushing came to the Pop Whalen with a strong squad and an impressive record. Brewster started poorly, giving up a breakaway on the Brewster net 10 seconds into the game, but Carl Maltais-Beland was equal on that play as the Brewster goalie. Maltais-Beland remained steady, and more often, spectacular, as Cushing threw almost 40 shots on the Brewster net. Cushing got on the board with a 5 on 3 power play, but that was it, as the game was only 1-0 in Cushing's favor after one period. Cushing added two more in the second to make it 3-0. In the third, the Bobcats weren't dead yet, as Brian Hart made a superb, behind-the-back backhand pass to teammate Spencer Montgomery, and Brewster had now made a ballgame of it. Unfortunately, with poor coverage on a D-zone face-off, Cushing made it 4-1 and that turned out to be an insurmountable lead. Brewster put solid pressure on the Cushing cage at the end of the game and there overall effort was solid. Hats off to Cushing for bringing a solid team to town. #1 star Carl Maltais-Beland #2 star Spencer Montgomery two goals and numerous face-off wins

What a thrilling up and down game for the Bobcats! After being down 2-0 in the first period before they could really blink, the Bobcats made a goal tending change to Andrew Marks, and the tide turned. Brewster outworked the Seawolves and scored twice, notching it at two after one period. In the second stanza, Brewster's Marks was again superb, making several sparkling saves. Tabor was gifted offensively, cycled the puck well, and hit the blue with great speed, but Brewster countered with strong back checking and strong defense. Up 5-3 late in the second, Tabor peppered the Brewster net, notched one and almost had several others but it ended 5-4 in Brewster's favor after two periods. The Bobcats knew they would have to dig deep to stay with the high-flying Tabor team. Unfortunately, Brewster didn't exactly start the third as they would have wished, allowing Tabor to tie the score at five only 27 seconds into the period. But, the Bobcats answered and again had the lead. What did the game finally come down to? A final face-off in Brewster's end with four seconds left, with six Tabor attackers and only four Brewster defenders on the ice. But Marks and Co. held on and the victory was secured. #1 star to Andrew Marks for rising to the challenge and playing superbly #2 star to Yegor Bezuglyy for a hat trick, including the game winner #3 star Brian Hart for two goals, two assists and Ridge Garbutt with two goals three assists #4 star - the Team! |

Brewster headed to Highlander country and came out with the win. Down eight players with sickness and injury, including the loss of three defensemen, the D corps of Cade Vittum, Brady Palmer, Riley Merritt and Adam Guillemette did the job and shut down the Pingree offense. Goaltender Andrew Marks was also sharp, making 26 saves to preserve the shutout. Pete Galasso got the bobcats on the board in the first period, and that would hold until the Brewster offense could truly come to life, and score three in the third frame. Left wing Brian Hart had two goals in eight seconds and attempted the "Chara bomb" from the slot, but the hat-trick proved elusive. Chris Drakos continues to be one of the top "energy" guys, scoring with 25 seconds left in the game. Overall, a solid win! PAWS : Vittum, Palmer, Guillemetter, R. Hebron came to the Pop Whalen arena for a quarterfinal New England playoff game and it would prove to be almost a carbon copy of an earlier regular season battle. The Lumberjacks got on the board first on a power play, and scored another later in the game as they built a 4-1 lead through two periods. Two especially bright spots for the Bobcats were the play of goaltender Andrew Marks, who was sharp in net, and Mitch Chapman, who scored the first Brewster goal and seemed to be all over the ice. Going into the third period the Brewster squad could have folded up the tent to the powerful, hard-hitting Hebron squad but Brian Hart notched Brewster's second goal and that brought the bench alive. Joey Grasso potted another, then Hart another and the rink was buzzing as the Bobcats had scored three unanswered goals in the third period to tie it up. Peter Galasso on the "Red Line," and Mitch Chapman who played forward and defense, were a big part of the spark for Brewster. Into overtime it went and unfortunately for Brewster, it wasn't meant to be. Good luck to Hebron in their playoff run and congrats to the Brewster club for never giving up and playing one whale of a game! Great season, guys! | |
