Teaching Awards

Each year Brewster honors faculty members for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments in one of two areas, Excellence in Teaching and Career Growth.

The Excellence in Teaching Award

Nominated by faculty, administration, students, parents, and/or trustees, this designation and award is given annually in recognition of demonstrated excellence in teaching practices and overall contributions within the Brewster Academy program.

2009 Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient:
Bret Barnett
The 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award recipient is Bret Barnett, math department chair and co-community life parent. Those who nominated Barnett for the award offered the following remarks on his professionalism and excellence as a teacher and department chair:

“Bret is absolutely one of the best teachers, amazing to have. Bret experiences consistently high student [evaluations]. Bret wants to make sure that students are treated fairly, are assessed fairly, and will work with others to ensure that. Bret was a great asset in the faculty-mentor program.”

“Bret is an excellent math teacher, students love him …”

“He is a remarkable guy; he gives a lot to the school and is a favorite of the students. Bret is doing some wonderful things in the classroom with our students.”

“Bret is top-notch in the classroom. He is involved in many things – department head, co-dorm parent, student government, debate.”

  • Effort to assist core teachers in their efforts in support of their students

  • Tenacity and drive to see that students are fairly assessed and assisting in the development of adaptations for them

The Career Growth Award

Nominated by faculty, administration, students, parents, and/or trustees, this designation and award is given in recognition of that faculty member who over the course of the year has demonstrated the most accelerated professional growth within the Brewster Academy program.

 2009 Career Growth Award Recipient:
 Jaime Garzon
The 2009 Career Growth Award recipient is Jaime Garzon, Spanish teacher and community life parent. Those who nominated Garzon for the award offered the following remarks on his growth since joining the Brewster community in 2006:

“ … His level of growth is amazing. Jaime always exhibits a positive attitude as a dorm parent, he maintains a calm presence in the dorm, handles issues well, is a good communicator, and good presence within our community.”

“… Jaime works very hard to improve his understanding of our students and their different learning styles.”

“Jaime has a quiet demeanor, yet will mix things up in the classroom. … He sets high, yet realistic expectations for our students.”

 “… He likes to get involved with his students, and maintains a level of respect for and from his students.”

“He exhibits an appreciation for being here at Brewster and his happiness translates into doing a good job. …”

are recognized for:

 Past Recipients
  • Productivity and degree of excellence in the curriculum they have developed

  • High evaluations in five different classes from their director, peers, and students

  • Demonstrated excellence in the delivery of best practice pedagogies

  • Strong and valuable contributions made to all team efforts

  • Making tremendous use of technology in curriculum design and delivery and taking advantage of the Internet

  • Building an awareness and sensitivity within the community of the needs of the students in the English as a Second Language program
