Jaime Garzon is a Spanish teacher on the junior Team Thomas and the community life parent in Harris House. In 2009 Mr. Garzon received the Brewster Academy Career Growth Award, one of two faculty awards presented annually.
“I was greatly surprised in 2009 with the Brewster Career Growth Award that I received with profound respect, immense satisfaction, and the personal promise to continue improving,” he said.
Since his arrival on campus in 2006, Mr. Garzon says he has learned a lot (including English!) during his career at Brewster and feels very confident and happy in the community.
A native of Colombia, Mr. Garzon enjoys teaching Brewster students how to speak his first language and talking with them about Latin American culture. As a former marine biologist, he enjoys any opportunity to speak to students about life in the tropical oceans.
After finishing high school, he attended Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogota, earning a bachelor’s of science in marine biology. He then moved to the city of Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast of Colombia to work at the National Marine Research Institute. After four years, he returned to school at the Colombian National University and received a master’s in science in marine biology in 1987.
“After 26 years of an exciting career and unforgettable SCUBA diving experiences in many places of the tropical seas, I decided to make a big change in my life and moved with my wife Diana and two sons (Nicolas and Alejandro) to live in the United States in 2006.”
Mr. Garzon’s wife Diana Salazar works at Brewster in housekeeping. His oldest son Juan Pablo lives in Colombia where he is studying to be a physician. Nicolas is a 2009 Brewster graduate and now attends Boston College, and Alejandro will be a freshman at Brewster in 2010.
In his free time Mr. Garzon enjoys listening to music (anything from old classics to modern pop), reading, watching a good soccer game on TV, barbecuing for his family in the spring, hiking and taking pictures of plants in the fall, swimming in the lake with all his boys during the summer, or learning cross country skiing in the winter.
“We are very grateful and enjoy every day the opportunity to live and work in this wonderful community.”
