Service in Action

In addition to the projects shown below, a sampling of service projects undertaken during the 2009-2010 school year include:
  • The girls of Brown Hall made fleece blankets for babies and children in Haiti;
  • The boys of Sargent II created a Halloween Haunted House and donated money raised to the Wolfeboro Welfare Department;
  • Avery House girls walked in the Stacey Burns Memorial Walk, raising money for a scholarship at the local high school;
  • Interact Club members were active in raising funds for The Holiday Basket, the Haiti Project, and UNICEF;
  • The National Honor Society members organized a winter coat drive; and
  • Individual students supported the Cinderella Project and "adopted" children in need.
  • More than half the students participated in Relay for Life, raising money for cancer research

Laxers Raise Money for The Jimmy Fund

May 15, 2010 -- The boys’ varsity lacrosse team raised more than $5,000 for The Jimmy Fund.  The team, which does a community service project each year, dedicated their last home game in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of its victims. "Once we considered a cancer fundraiser as this year’s team project, the boys took off with it,” explained Head Coach Bill Lee.

"As a team we really wanted to do something to give back," Riley Merritt said. "Since we had a teammate, Nate Billings, last year who overcame cancer, and several members of our team have had relatives affected by cancer, cancer research was something we felt very motivated to raise money for."

ESL Students Visit Local Elementary School

November 2009 --
ESL students visited a local elementary school to offer students a glimpse of life in their native countries. Students from Japan, Quebec, Ukraine, and Thailand talked about the culture, food, geography, and history of their respective provinces and countries while answering questions from the young students.

Environmental Expo

April 2010 --
Students from the Environmental Club participated in an area Environmental Expo for Earth Week. They collected old mobile phones to be recycled and educated attendees on ways that Brewster Academy is becoming greener. The Environmental Club is one of the most active campus clubs.

Bobcat Laxers Coach Local U11 Girls' Lacrosse Team

May 2010 -- On a rainy May day, the varsity lacrosse girls traveled to the NICK Recreation Park to share their love of the game with the local Abenaki girls' U11 team. Despite the driving rain and wind, there were smiles all around as the Brewster girls paired up with the younger girls to offer technique tips and expertise on the game. There may just be a few future Bobcats among the Abenaki girls.

Strength Training and Log Cleanup

October 2009 -- A group of advanced strength students took their muscles on a road trip and did some community service for a local resident. The boys moved massive logs across muddy terrain and small streams. They then split and stacked many of the logs and made large burn piles of brush. "This was a fun team building/ community service project," said Zack Apgar, advanced strength training coach. The owner of the property is a single mom and was very appreciative to have some help cleaning out her land that had been trashed by loggers.
