Local Students Gain Global Perspective
November, 2009 -- When members of Brewster’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program taught local elementary students about what it is like to grow up in their home countries recently, it was a magically symbiotic event. The Brewster students gained an opportunity to practice their English skills with an authentic audience. The 5th and 6th graders from New Durham Elementary School learned about the cultures of nine different foreign countries from natives of those countries. It was an experience that both groups will remember for a long time.
The presentations made by the ESL students were part of their work in their ESL Culture class where they gain an understanding of American culture while working on their English speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. This project involved students researching and organizing information about their home country, preparing their speech, and developing a visual presentation using their laptop computers.
