Athletics Bios
Doug Algate personifies the enthusiasm and energy of our student athletes in his teaching, training, and coaching responsibilities.
Mr. Algate comes to Brewster with an extensive athletic background. He taught physical education in Australia for 13 years and was a department chair in an Australian Public School, which is the equivalent to an American private school. He also taught English at Bunkyo University High School in Tokyo where he was chair of the ESL department and in charge of the Home Stay program.
His love of athletics led him to play squash and professional football in Australia.
Mr. Algate's primary goal as athletic director is to continue the development of the athletic curriculum and align it with the academic curriculum strategies. Part of this evolving process requires that all students participate in a fitness evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to ensure positive and healthy participation in the student's chosen sport. In addition to fitness, other goals and objectives include character development, teamwork, and the skills and tactics associated with athletics and all human endeavors.
He holds a bachelor's in education with a physical education major from Adelaide University in Adelaide, South Australia.
When Mr. Algate is not busy directing the athletic program, he's often out running, cycling, or playing tennis.
Kate Turner
Associate Athletic Director
Kate Turner came to Brewster in 1986 from Kingswood High School where, in addition to her teaching responsibilities, she had been coaching field hockey at the junior varsity level. She began the field hockey program at Brewster that year and also coached in the alpine ski and girls' lacrosse programs. During her first year at Brewster, the assistant athletic director position opened up and Kate was thrilled to step into that job.
In the winter, she may be found ice skating, alpine skiing, or iceboating. In the summer, sailing, tennis, and kayaking are her interests. She is the proud grandmother of four girls and a baby boy born in 2005.
Kate serves as vice president in charge of publications for the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). In this position, she publishes the directory for the 165-member schools. She enjoys this challenge and the connections that it gives her to the greater independent school community.
We welcome Kirsty to Brewster. She joins our athletic department after three years at Kingswood Regional High School where she initiated their athletic training program.
Kirsty graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine and went on to complete a master's in Exercise Science from the California University of Pennsylvania.
Her enthusiasm for sports and athletics training has taken her around the country, working at universities including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical in Florida and SUNY New Paltz, as well as working with the Cape Cod Baseball League.
When Kirsty isn't in the training room she can be found in the gym working out, playing tennis, or working on her latest hobby, golf.
Angelo joined the Brewster Athletic department in 2000, the year that he moved north from Connecticut where he had been working for the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and coaching for 14years in youth league basketball and baseball. He also served for seven years as inner city recreational department director.
Here at Brewster, Angelo takes care of the uniform and equipment needs of all 30+ of our athletic teams. Although Angelo is a Yankees fan, he is still very popular among the students who count on him for the latest sports scores and statistics. Angelo supervises a select few members of the "Student Athletic Staff" program - the "Green Team."
