NCAA Playoffs Boast Brewster Alumni

March 27, 2006 – A number of Brewster Academy alumni were represented in recent NCAA tournament play.

Jeff Adrien, a 2005 Brewster graduate and power forward helped the UConn Huskies to the regional finals of the Washington DC bracket. The #1 UConn team fell to #11 George Mason University in the Elite 8. Adrien scored a career high 17 points and had a team high 7 rebounds in the contest.

Before Adrien and his team met George Mason, they defeated the University of Washington, whose roster includes two Brewster alums – Joel Smith, who graduated in 2004, and Harvey Perry, a 2005 Brewster graduate. Smith is a small forward and Perry is a shooting guard for Washington.

“Adrien and Perry were roommates at Brewster, and Joel Smith served as Jeff Adrien's tour guide when he visited campus in the fall of 2003,” said Brewster Coach Jason Smith, who was at the game rooting for his former players.

Adrien was recently named to the All Freshman Team in the Big East Conference. Off the court Adrien had been penning "Jeff Adrien's NCAA Diary" column for the Boston Herald.

Another Brewster hoopster who was in contention for a championship is 2005 graduate Chad Millard, a forward for the University of Louisville who lost in the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament.

In women’s ice hockey, 2003 Brewster graduate Sadie Wright-Ward led the #1 ranked University of New Hampshire Wildcats to a 29-game winning streak before falling to #4 Minnesota in the NCAA semifinals.

It’s been reported that Wright-Ward centers the most potent line in college hockey. Read more about Wright-Ward in New Hampshire Union Leader.

In Division III, former Wright-Ward teammate, 2005 graduate Margaret MacDonald, helped Middlebury College win its third consecutive NCAA title in 2006.

Also in Division III hockey, 2004 graduate Shawn Houde is a member of the Hobart College team that lost in the semifinals of the ECAC playoffs. Last season Houde was honored as ECAC West Men’s Hockey Rookie of the Week.
