The Team
The Brewster Academy girls' hockey program has experienced considerable success since its inception as a varsity sport in the 1998-1999 season. The team competes in the New England Prep School Conference at the Division I level and is a member of the Lakes Region League. The Lady Bobcats play a rigorous 30 game schedule. Additionally, the team plays in both the Deerfield Academy Invitational Tournament and the Northwood School New Years’ Showcase. Both tournaments provide great exposure and an opportunity to compete against some of the top teams in the United States and Canada.
Prior to moving to Division I for the 2005-2006 season, the Lady Bobcats won six consecutive Lakes Region Titles (1999-2005) and two New England Division II Championships (2000-2001 and 2002-2003).
Although Brewster Academy is a relative newcomer to the ranks of girls' hockey, a strong tradition of excellence has been established, and numerous graduates are now playing both Division I and Division III college hockey. Recent graduates have played or are currently playing at Boston College, Bowdoin College, Colgate University, Cornell University, The University of New Hampshire, Hamilton College, Harvard University, The University of Maine, Manhattanville College and Middlebury College.
During the season the girls are on the ice six days a week. Home games and practices are held at the newly renovated Pop Whalen Ice Arena. In addition to on ice practices, all players make use of the state of the art weight room and training facility in The Smith Center.
The 2007-08 Season
The 2007-2008-hockey season was touted to be a rebuilding year for Brewster Academy. With twelve new players in the program and only four seniors on the team, the word on the street was that Brewster was young and talented, but would not be one of the elite eight to make the NEPSAC tournament. The tournament is one of the most difficult to make in the country. The number of teams that compete for only eight spots makes each year exciting and extremely competitive. The Lady Bobcats defied the odds and finished the regular season ranked seventh in New England. Brewster entered the quarterfinals on a hot streak, having not lost a game since early January. The draw slated them to face an extremely talented Choate Rosemary Hall team. Choate was the defending champion and would not give up their title without a fight. In an exciting game, Brewster lost on a late third period goal by a score of 4-3. Making the Division I tournament in their second year in the league was a great step forward for the Lady Bobcats. Brewster Academy is now recognized as one of the premier hockey teams in the country and the future of the program has never been brighter.
The 2007-08 season began with a convincing 6-1 win over St. Paul’s School. From the first drop of the puck until the final game of the season the girls never looked back. They compiled a 19-6-3 overall record. Some highlights of the season included winning the Deerfield Academy Holiday Tournament and a strong showing at the Northwood New Year’s Showcase. Key victories on the season included a 3-1 win over North American Hockey Academy, a 6-2 win over National Sports Academy, a string of shutouts in February against Andover 2-0, BB&N 8-0, Exeter 9-0, and Loomis Chafee 2-0 and a berth in the DI Quarterfinals.
The team bids farewell to a talented and accomplished group of seniors. Teraysa White graduates holding just about every goaltending record. Kristin Ezard’s leadership ability will leave a lasting impression on the younger players and her ability as Captain sets the bar for the future. The hard work of Emily Lesko, a four-year varsity player, and the strength and determination of Emilie Arseneault, another four-year varsity player, will not be forgotten.
