Student Facilitators
Distinction between facilitation positions:
Wall Supervisor/Lead Facilitator/Assistants
General guidelines for all positions:
- Each facilitator on duty is required to wear a harness and have available a belay device and be able to perform a rescue to the belayer.
- Minimum number of facilitators is 2; maximum number 5.
- Facilitators are the only people allowed in storage area or behind the desk.
- Facilitators keep a critical eye open during all climbing procedures.
Wall supervisor: Jonathan Fouser
- Wall supervisor is in charge of the facility and use of the equipment. Any program to take place in the Haines Climbing Barn requires the permission of the wall supervisor.
- Wall supervisor is responsible for the keys to the facility.
- Wall supervisor maintains the facility, which entails checking the safety of the wall and gear, placing and rearranging holds, and overseeing the continuous upkeep.
- Wall supervisor plans and schedules program with facilitators.
- Wall supervisor must observe and test the practices of those facilitators who would like to become lead facilitators.
Lead Facilitator duties:
(Before one becomes a lead supervisor, the person must have logged in time as an assistant, show perfect demonstration of skills, and have participated in other climbing programs in the barn. Those willing to become a lead facilitator must organize and execute a training program under the guidance and observation of the wall supervisor.)
Before the day beings, the facilitator must ask: "Am I well and healthy enough to work today."
- Opening procedures: Maintian a "critical eye" when opening the facility. Check security of the building and storage area. Check all climbing gear and ropes for use that day. Evaluate gear logbook. Check floor for obstructions. Set up climbing ropes that will be used. Set up hardware on table for use that day. Make sure safety equipment is present and ready to use.
- Wall supervisor meets with other facilitators at least 30 minutes before a program begins to review the upcoming program and prepare the barn.
- Wall supervisor instructs new participants in training until climbing begins, then roams while supervising maintains a critical eye.
- Wall supervisor directs assistants in their duties.
- Wall supervisor has ability to call participants on unsafe procedures and to stop climbing process in order to correct procedure.
- Wall supervisor can remove participants from facility if participant jeopardizes safety of the program.
- Closing procedures: Count and itemize gear used. Log gear use in book, makes notes, and notify climbing wall manager if there is any damage. Record participant date. Store gear in gear room, lock gear room. Turn off all lights. Lock building, including all windows and doors.
Assistant Duties:
- Arrive at barn 30 minutes before program begins to review with facilitator and assist in preparation.
- Keep participants off wall until it is ready for use.
- Help supervisor sort and prepare gear.
- Assistant may instruct in the presence of the wall supervisor.
- Assistant has ability to call participants on unsafe procedures and stop climbing process in order to correct the procedure.
- Assistant helps break down the facility and put away gear after program is over. Also provides lead facilitator with information concerning participants' skill mastery with instructional program in order to record information in the book, i.e. who is ready to be certified.
Participants:
- Always wear a correctly sized helmet while climbing.
- Bind long hair.
- Remove loose jewelry.
- Must have proper and supportive attitude.
- Must be prepared with proper attire.
- Must understand the use of the climbing calls.
- Must respect all gear (do not step on ropes)
- All participants must hand in gear at end of session (do not drop or throw).
