2007 Fall Team

The Team

The Sailing Program is launched from Brewster's own Pinckney Boathouse, which is on the shore of New Hampshire's largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, and just a two-minute walk from the the main academic building.

In the fall, we offer an instructional program to teach the basics of high performance dinghy sailing to those who have not sailed competitively. Sailors begin instruction in Tech dinghies and then move into one of Brewster's ten 420s as soon as possible. As of fall 2007, we also offer advanced sailing, which meets six days per week and competes on the club level throughout northern New England.

The spring program offers competitive high school racing to sailors with prior experience. The junior varsity concentrates on learning the basic skills of fleet and team racing, using the Techs, while the varsity actively competes against schools from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The varsity focuses on learning the strategy and tactics of three-on-three team racing in 420s, the standard format for high school sailing meets. We also compete in the New England Fleet Racing Championships, the New England Team Racing Championships, and the Women's New England Championships.

The Coach

Peter Colcord
Head Varsity Sailing Coach

Peter Colcord grew up sailing, beginning with the usual sunfish and lasers and finally purchasing a Solcat 18 in his early teens. Sailing mostly on lake Sunapee in New Hampshire he and his best friend and crew spent every weekend from ice out to the first snow experimenting with the shifty and unpredictable winds so common on New England lakes. More recently Peter has sailed the British Virgin Islands on a 41 foot catamaran, crewed a J105 off Marblehead MA and participated in a match race aboard an E33 with Jud Smith, reigning Rolex yachtsman of the year.

Peter is the father of Alex '09 and he and his family live in Wolfeboro.
