Boys' Tennis

Varsity Team 2008

The Team

Brewster Academy's Tennis Program offers a number of options designed to provide individual attention for students. The program's goal is to develop an independent, confident, and self-reliant learner, while promoting reasonable risks and the willingness to stretch your limits. The program is open to both girls and boys, and we compete in the Lakes Region with seven other schools. The team practices on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, with Wednesday and Saturday reserved for competitive matches with other schools.

2008 Season Summary

We had a slow start to the season due to record snowfalls around the Lakes Region. Fortunately, we had the indoor turf to play on and that gave us a head start on many other schools. We finished the season with eight wins and two losses (both to New Hampton), and had a chance of winning the Lakes Region Championship right to the end.
We had a very successful season, both on and off the court. It was one of the best seasons boys varsity tennis has had on record, and all students achieved JBS status in the last recognition period. WanGi Cho won the Coaches Award for going from a winless season last year, to winning all of his singles this year. Mark Lubin won the Most Improved Player Award for starting at the # 8 seed on the team and finishing as the winning # 3 player. # 1 seed Marc Eichler won the Most Valuable Player for beating all his opponents except one.
The returning players are all looking forward to playing on our brand new courts located on campus. These courts will allow students to play in the their free time, as well as attracting potential players to the school. With three of the top four players graduating this year, we all realize that we are going to have to work even harder to duplicate the results we achieved this year.

The Coach

Doug Algate has been in charge of the Boys Varsity Tennis program for two years. After a 500 season last year, he hopes to better that record this year. He has a talented group of players that he hopes he can develop into a team that strives to do the best they can, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship. With the construction of 9 new tennis courts, and the availability of playing indoors on the AstroTurf, Coach Algate feels that the tennis program is going to grow over the next few years.

He first played tennis in Australia many years ago, playing college level tennis there. He taught Physical Education in Australia for 13 years as well as coaching several Varsity tennis teams, before moving to Japan, where he continued to play at a competitive level.

Coach Algate has been Brewster's Athletic Director for the past 10 years.
