Girls' TennisThe TeamBrewster offers a strong, full range tennis program for the competitive player, the recreational player interested in improving skills, and the beginner. In the fall, students can participate in an instructional tennis program three afternoons a week, and during the winter trimester indoor tennis is also available three afternoons. Competitive tennis takes place in the spring when teams typically practice four days a week and compete with other schools twice a week. We offer both varsity and a second level team that compete in the Lakes Region League. Both levels of play focus on individual development and improvement within a well defined curriculum that emphasizes all facets of the game, including technique, strategy, fitness, and mental toughness.
Team members learn to become more independent players by analyzing all aspects of their game after each match. Players progress from diagnosing the weaknesses in their own games to remedying them and recognizing and capitalizing on the weaknesses of their opponents' game. This is a particularly important skill and is often overlooked in a sport where coaching in a match is limited and where many people continue playing after high school or college without a coach. There is a strong emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship along with a focus on the individual qualities of perseverance, drive, and competitive spirit. .The varsity squad has had consistently winning teams throughout its Brewster history, with varsity players often winning the Lakes Region League Tournament. Many players have gone on to play in college. The new Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness provides more room to do team specific training in the fitness center and portable nets are available for indoor practice on the convertible turf. The Varisty CoachAnne Marie Allwine is the head of Brewster's tennis program, overseeing other coaches and developing the tennis program curriculum. Coach Allwine brings 32 years of tennis experience to the program. She began playing in tournaments at age 12 and went on to play on her high school's varsity team where she served as team captain. Since college, where she played in tournaments and intramurals, she has continued to participate in year-round leagues and tournaments. She has both participated in and instructed at tennis camps and has taught private and semi-private lessons. She began coaching tennis at Brewster as the boys' junior varsity coach for two years but has coached the girls' varsity team for the past seven years. She also has taught instructional tennis in the fall. Coach Allwine is a Certified Professional Tennis Instructor by the United States National Tennis Academy (USNTA). Coach Allwine has been Brewster's school counselor for the past 11 years. She also has served as director of community living and taught human development classes.
