High Quality Athletic and Fitness Facilities High-tech
doesn’t apply only to our academic buildings. It extends to The
David M. and Sheila H. Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness, which
opened in September 2002. This state-of-the-art facility is one of the
finest athletic and wellness centers among independent schools. It’s
where the Brewster Bobcats’ 13 interscholastic sports teams train
and play, where intramurals and recreational sports games are held, and
where the entire campus community stays in shape.
The 50,000-square-foot complex offers fitness and play opportunities that are second to none. It has the only convertible turf floor of any independent school. In just 20 minutes, the artificial turf rolls out across the two basketball courts, creating a surface on which sports such as baseball, lacrosse, and soccer can be played. The turf offers an alternative place to practice during inclement weather and adds to the array of intramural and recreational options available on campus. Within the Smith Center, and offering panoramic views of the playing fields, the lake and the mountains, is the Stabile Kaywin Fitness Center. This modern fitness center features free weights; cardiovascular equipment including four exercise bikes, one Lifecycle, and one Tectrix bike, one Stairmaster and two Tectriz steppers, two Quinton treadmills, physioballs, abdominal rollers, slide boards and more; and Body Masters Selecterized equipment machines such as a dual cable station and a Smith machine, as well as ample room for stretching. Other major features of the Smith Center include: • Four-lane, 200-meter tuned fitness track
on the mezzanine level with open viewing to the court area and 360-degree
views of our campus, the lake, and the mountains As a student-athlete at Brewster, you’ll also have access to an athletic trainer, for sports-specific training, nutritional guidance, advanced strength training, and to help you develop lifelong personal fitness habits. The Center is named for David M. Smith, who first
came to Brewster in 1969 as a history teacher, coach, and dorm parent
and served from 1974 to 2003 as headmaster. It also honors Sheila H.
Smith, who was the Academy’s associate director of admission for
nearly 20 years. The Smiths retired in June 2003. |
