Career Progression at Brewster

Introduction

Brewster believes that in recognition of the professionalism of teachers career progression should be supported and formalized. In doing so we create an opportunity to recognize excellence in teaching. The career path is referenced to the body of practice, outstanding classroom practice and leadership in each area of the design. We believe that excellence in teaching as defined by the school through its body of practice is a developmental process of professional growth.

The career path at Brewster is linked to Brewster Summer Institute and the Brewster Model’s ongoing process of professional support and evaluation. Transition through the career path is based upon the development of a professional portfolio.

Following is a brief description of each of the steps on the career path.

Career Steps:

Graduate
This is the entry level of the career path and is a one-year appointment for recently graduated individuals new to teaching or individuals from other schools in their first two years of teaching. For an individual who has a successful first year at the graduate level, a second year contract will be offered.

Instructor
This tier is available to applicants with three-five years previous teaching experience and graduate level teachers moving on. The Instructor is an early career professional who is accumulating experience in those areas central to the Brewster program or who comes with relevant experience from another school. A teacher at Instructor level is expected to move to the Teacher level after two years experience and a successful evaluation in the second year.

Teacher
This tier is available to applicants with six or more years of teaching experience and Instructors moving on. Teacher is the entry-level ceiling for individuals who come to Brewster from other schools. The teacher is an early to mid-career professional with significant experience in those areas central to the Brewster program or who comes with relevant experience from another school.

Master
The Master is an individual who demonstrates excellence in all elements of the Brewster program. An individual can remain indefinitely at Master level, subject to successful on-going evaluation* without an associated time limit.

Senior Master
Senior Master teachers meet all requirements associated with Master Level and have a demonstrated interest and skill in providing instructional leadership beyond modeling excellence in practice. For example, Senior Master teachers serve on School Teams and as Department Heads/Team Leaders.

* Successful portfolio-based evaluation is the fundamental criteria for promotion. Ideally, all teachers participate in the Brewster Summer Institute prior to involvement in a teaching team.
