Brewster Welcomes the Coopers

Dr. Michael E CooperOn July 1, 2003, the Brewster community welcomed its newest members – the Coopers: Mike, Andrea, Allie, and Adam – when Dr. Michael E. Cooper became the Academy's 11th head of school.

Dr. Cooper's wife, Andrea, is a former elementary school art teacher who looks forward to becoming active in both the campus and Wolfeboro communities. Allie, 21, is a junior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Adam, 24, is entering his third year at Albany Law School. The Coopers, along with their dog Tess reside in Lord House.

Since his arrival, Dr. Cooper has attended Brewster Summer Institute, a National Association of Independent Schools conference for new heads of schools (along with 60 other new heads of schools) and continues to learn all he can about the Academy and all it offers to students. In mid-August, he will participate in his first board meeting with the Brewster trustees.

When asked about what's most on his mind, Dr. Cooper responded by saying how excited he is about the start of school. "In a very short time I'll be welcoming students back for another school year," he said. "I am especially excited about that prospect and look forward to getting to know the students and learning more about their sense of the rhythms and flow of life here at Brewster. I feel that I am taking the helm of a school that has been left to me in terrific shape and is blessed with a dedicated and committed faculty and staff whose primary aim is to best serve the needs of our students."

Academic Dean Marilyn Shea commented, "When the search committee polled the Brewster community – students, parents and teachers – Dr. Cooper was everyone's clear first choice. Now that we have had a chance to work with Dr. Cooper, it is obvious we were all right."
