— Dr. Alan Bain, associate headmaster of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., presented a paper on re-designing schools and curriculum to reflect the changes in and impact of technology in schools. Bain was among 60 leaders of educational technology and the only practitioner researcher invited to present a paper at the conference "Creating the Future of Schools, Colleges, and Departments of Education in the Age of Technology: An Invitational Working Conference."

"What became clear from the presentations by leading academics at this conference is that Brewster Academy in the year 2000 is a working example of what many academics envision for the future of schools and a model for what could result from the improvement in professional preparation programs for educators," explained Bain.

The goal of the conference was to create an action agenda of how to best deal with technology integration for schools, colleges, and departments of education in this technology age. Other participants included experts in teacher education from the private sector, government, elementary and secondary education, higher education, and foundations.

"This was a terrific opportunity for leaders of teacher education programs to frame a direction for the future of ed schools," said David Imig, president and CEO of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. "With contributions from an array of experts, it was a valuable conference."

The three-day conference was sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the University of Northern Iowa, and Apple Computer Inc. It was held at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino where participants used technology in their discussions about the effect of technology.
