December Alumni Athlete of the Month: Aaron Wheeler ‘17, Purdue Basketball

We celebrate the start of the winter by recognizing a former Bobcat and exemplary student-athlete: Aaron Wheeler ’17. Wheeler, a Stamford, Conn., native, was a key cog in the 2017 Brewster team that finished its season with a NEPSAC Class AAA title and a National Championship—and is arguably the best Brewster Basketball team in the history of the program with its 35-0 record. Wheeler, who came to Brewster for his senior year, played on a team with loads of talent and was known for his athleticism and versatility as a 6’9 wing. Wheeler came off the bench that season and wound up earning the Most Outstanding Player honors in the 2017 National Prep Championship game, finishing with 22 points (went 5 for 5 from 3-point arc) and helped Brewster edge rival Northfield Mount Hermon in the finals.

“Aaron was a tremendous piece of our 2017 Championship team,” noted longtime head coach Jason Smith. “We are proud of the success that he has achieved thus far at Purdue. He has a very bright future. He was also a great teammate and representative of our program!”

Wheeler, who was ranked a top 150 player in the country, had a slew of offers but chose Purdue for its elite academic profile and rich basketball tradition. He has continued to be a contributor on the floor and last year appeared in all 31 games for the Boilermakers. The team is anticipating a strong upcoming season. Wheeler redshirted his freshman year, allowing him a fifth season at Purdue for the 2021-2022 academic year, during which he will pursue a graduate degree. Upon graduation, he hopes to continue his playing career professionally as long as he can, and then would like to get involved in the professional sports industry.

Congratulations to Aaron Wheeler for being named our Alum of the Month for December!
