The Cooper Series for Innovative Learning is an annual symposium named in honor of former Head of School Michael E. Cooper to celebrate his many contributions, including continuing Brewster’s long-standing commitment to innovation. Dr. Cooper was instrumental in bringing programs like emotional intelligence and project-based learning to Brewster. The Cooper Series is intended as an opportunity to bring innovative topics and speakers to campus each year to inspire discussion throughout the school community.
The 2020 Cooper Series speaker was Thomas D. Kearns, FAIA, LEED AP and President of Dewing Schmid & Kearns (DSK), a Massachusetts-based architecture and planning firm founded in 1984. Mr. Kearns is a graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. He was the academic program coordinator for Leading Organizations at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He is also an instructor in the Advancement Management Development Program at Harvard, running a studio focused on urban design and development strategies for global cities. He is a widely published author and regularly presents to various professional and academic organizations. Before joining DSK, Mr. Kearns was the Chair of the Board of Directors and Principal for Planning and Design at Shepley Bulfinch, where we worked with a broad range of colleges and universities including MIT, Harvard, Boston College, and Boston University. Current clients include Rhode Island School of Design, Xavier University, Merrimack College, Concord Academy, the Town of Bedford, MA, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Brewster Academy.
Mr. Kearns spoke with members of the Brewster community about planning as a profession, what goes into planning for a campus like Brewster’s, and the current master plan for Brewster. He also shared a detailed update on the ongoing Reimagine Rogers project, which broke ground in September 2020. Mr. Kearns engaged the students with several open-ended questions, and also took questions from student panelists and from the audience at large.
