Brewster Academy is pleased to announce that W. Stuart Symington, United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be the 2019 Commencement speaker. A graduate of Brown University and Columbia University Law School, Ambassador Symington clerked for the Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Missouri and then practiced corporate law in Missouri, New York, London, and Paris, before committing himself to public service as a Foreign Service Officer in 1986.  Since that time, he has worked around the globe as a champion of democracy. Along with significant experience in supporting peacekeeping missions, democratic transition and consolidation, counter-terrorism, economic development, and public health, Ambassador Symington served as the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commander of the North American Aerospace Command and Northern Command, and taught at the National Defense University’s Joint Forces Staff College.

During the past two decades, Ambassador Symington has largely been stationed in Africa, serving in a range of positions: Deputy Chief of Mission in Niger (2001-2003), Ambassador to Djibouti (2006-2008) and Rwanda (2008-2011), U.S. Special Representative for the Central Africa Republic (2014-2015), and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central Africa and African Security Affairs (2015-2016) until assuming his current position in Nigeria.

Today in Nigeria, Ambassador Symington is focused on helping Nigeria experience a “free, fair, credible, transparent, and above all, peaceful” election process, urging citizens to know their rights and seize the opportunity to “express their will” by voting. Recognizing Nigeria as the United States’ “long term and enduring friend,” Ambassador Symington understands that collaboration among individual citizens and among nations is critical for the prosperity essential to peace. His vast diplomatic experience has convinced him that individuals can effect positive change both locally and globally.  We are delighted to have such a devoted public servant conclude our graduates’ Brewster experience as they prepare to shape a changing world.
