Ouellet and Wingard Honored with Highest Faculty Awards

Brewster’s Head of School Craig Gemmell announced The Arthur Morris Kenison Faculty Awards at an opening week school assembly on September 8. Jason Ouellet and Alicia Wingard received the highly regarded honors.

Gemmell gave Ouellet, a member of the history faculty and the Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse coach, The Arthur Morris Kenison Faculty Award for Career Growth. “When this teacher first arrived to Brewster,” Gemmell said, “he was known more for his coaching than his teaching, and he does remain an excellent and award-winning coach. However, as he has worked at Brewster over the past few years, he has translated his best coaching attributes into the classroom: His enthusiasm, his energy, and his high expectations for himself and his students have combined to make his history classes among the most engaging and educational on campus.” Gemmell continued to note that just as he has grown as a teacher, Ouellet—who attended Hobart College and coached college lacrosse for 14 years before coming to Wolfeboro—and his family have grown to be a vital and cherished part of the Brewster community.

The Arthur Morris Kenison Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching went to Alicia Wingard, part of the Instructional Support faculty at Brewster. “Walking into Alicia’s classroom, one first notices the exquisite and thoughtful decorations,” Gemmell said, “often thematic and always geared to helping her students feel comfortable and ready to learn. One next notices just how much she truly enjoys and cares for her students.” He went on to describe Wingard, who graduated from Auburn University, and received her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, as authentically joyful, truly friendly, and profoundly professional. “She creates a positive atmosphere even when she is getting students to work at things they might rather avoid, to practice strategies with which they are not entirely comfortable. A true educator, she understands and embodies the notion that the best teacher is the one who never stops learning: not only about teaching strategies and technologies, but more importantly about her students and the talents, troubles, and dreams that drive them,” he said. Wingard moved to Wolfeboro in 2012 and began teaching at Brewster in 2017. “I’m honored to be part of an educational community that values the learning differences of each student and provides a collaborative approach to instruction,” she says.

The awards are named for the late Arthur M. Kenison, who served devotedly on Brewster's Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1999 as the chair of the board finance committee.
