Students Celebrated at Moving Up Day

Students Celebrated at Moving Up Day
Suzanne Morrissey

Threatening afternoon clouds held onto their rain as Brewster underclassmen formed a cheering line for seniors and post graduate students processing across campus into the Smith Center, where the school’s annual Moving Up Day ceremony was held Monday, May 20.

After a welcome from Head of School Craig N. Gemmell, Guinevere Hilton, chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Department, reminded students of the school’s focus on awareness this year, and asked them to “explore how we can be more aware of our own individual creativity,” noting how sharing that creativity brings joy to the world. Hilton was speaking at the behest of longtime fine arts faculty member and Brewster alumnus BG Hodges, who retires this year after more than two decades of service to the school and community. Brewster’s Moving Up Day speaker is traditionally the longest-serving retiring faculty member, but Hodges eschewed the spotlight, choosing to pass the baton to Hilton while he stayed at his regular post on the sidelines, videotaping the event. Hodges would, however, take center stage at the end of the ceremony, when students honored him with the Winnipesaukean yearbook dedication and raucously cheered during a tribute slideshow of images from his storied career.

In a highly anticipated announcement, Gemmell revealed the Class of 2019 Ivy Address speakers, salutatorian and valedictorian. This year’s top post-graduate student is Louis Gleason of Danvers, Mass., who will attend Boston College in the fall. This year’s third in class senior and Ivy Address speaker will be Zachary Bennett of Wolfeboro who will attend Gordon College in Beverly, Mass. The salutatorian spot will be held by Renying Zhang of Jiaxing, China, who will attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall. Katharine Chiasson of Pelham, N.H. was named as valedictorian—she is headed to Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

Faculty members announced more than 40 students who earned honor roll status and presented National Honor Society gold tassels to 17 of those students. Next, the crowd of parents, staff, faculty, and students heard where the 2019 graduates are headed in the fall: dozens of colleges and universities large and small across the country and the world, including Tufts, Emory, NYU, Dartmouth, Boston College, Bucknell, Fordham, High Point University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Bucknell, Penn State, and Le Cordon Bleu London.

Students who have attended Brewster for all four years of high school received their “Lifer” pins from Gemmell, who told the younger classes they had big shoes to fill when this group of graduates left campus.

The following academic awards, voted on by the faculty, were also given at the ceremony:

The Myrtle Dodge Award to Robbie Rohrbaugh of Wolfeboro, for a high level of good citizenship, as well as distinguished academic ability and performance. Rohrbaugh also won the The Colby College Book Prize Award for excellence in historical study.

The Dartmouth Book Award to Ella Quinlan of Ossipee for academic excellence in the study of English.

The Holy Cross Book Prize Award is awarded for excellence in foreign language and is given to the student who demonstrates great promise and a love of languages, and this year went to French student Sophia Mazri of Windham, N.H.
