My Instructional Support Experience

Instructional Support (IS) has been a truly fantastic experience for me. I have taken it for three out of my four years at Brewster. It has helped me enormously in my academic success at Brewster, and it will carry on with me through college. The IS program has taught me so many valuable skills to use in and out of the classroom.

I came into Brewster as a small freshman, not confident in my academic career. I barely knew how to write an essay. I would sink into my chair when the teacher would talk about an essay assignment. With the help of Instructional Support, I began to become more and more confident in my academic work. I was being taught skills and was using them in the classroom—I was blown away. By the time I reached my sophomore year, I was a whole new student, and I did not have failure on my mind when I walked into school. In my sophomore year, I was even more confident in my work. I was ready to conquer my junior year and attack it head-on. When I began my junior year, I had the tools and skills that I needed to succeed. I began to rely less and less on my Instructional Support teacher and more on myself. 

For my last year at Brewster, I decided to stop Instructional Support. It has made me a better, more confident student, and I am very thankful for it. I would not be in the place I am today without the IS program, and I am very grateful for it. I have built great relationships with teachers. I have learned to stick up for myself and self-advocate. I have learned useful study skills. Most importantly, I can write a detailed essay by myself in a short period of time, and if you told me that freshman year, I would have never believed it, and I owe it all to Instructional Support.
