Overview

The English Language Learning (ELL) program at Brewster Academy integrates listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking, content instruction, and language instruction. Cultural heritage and previous language experience of the international students are celebrated as resources in our multidimensional and thematic program. Three levels of support are provided: Comprehensive Language Program (CLP), Language Assistance Program (LAP), and enrollment in core classes with an instructional support plan or Language Study Skills (LSS), which is provided in conjunction with the 10th grade curriculum.

CLP

Comprehensive Language Program

This program offers three courses and supports students with practicing and advancing their English language skills.

CLP Language - In this course students practice grammar basics, paragraph writing, newspaper skills, and the basics of academic writing skills. This course focuses on developing the level of language proficiency that will allow students to step closer to managing work in mainstream classes.

CLP Culture - By exploring themes in geography, culture, and history, and focusing on reading and oral presentation skills, this course provides students with skills to thrive in the U.S. high school system. The content material and skills closely connect to mainstream classes so as to facilitate a greater success with transition to core academic classes.

CLP Communication - This course provides students with opportunities to practice speaking and listening to English, and exposes students to practice of introductions, directions, interview skills, and speech presentation.

LAP

Language Assistance Program

This program has two courses and supports students with intermediate English language skills.

LAP Language - This course provides a bridge into mainstream English courses and is designed to allow student acquisition and practice of skills they will encounter in their core classes. The themes are writing skills and reading a variety of texts for meaning and meaning-making. Throughout the year, students practice reading and writing skills.

LAP Culture - The themes of the course are aligned with elements of the United States’ history and culture, and connect to topics studied in mainstream academic classes. Students work primarily on reading for research, writing non-fiction pieces, and oral presentations.

"My teachers always took good care of me in class, introduced me to new friends, and offered lots of opportunities for me to step out from my comfort zone, and enjoy my time with everyone."
