Spring 2025 Athletics Awards Announced
By Suzanne Morrissey
At an All-School Meeting in the Smith Center on May 20, with spring teams seated together with their coaches, Brewster’s Athletics Department awarded its Spring Sports Awards to student-athletes, including the coveted Director’s Prize.
As Athletic Director Connor Wells stresses at every season’s athletics awards ceremony, winning games on the scoreboard is not the only way that Brewster measures success in the sports arena. Trying one’s best and the way in which each Bobcat competes—with honor, heart, the intent to improve, and good sportsmanship—are the hallmarks of success.
Coach Wells said, “It has truly been a tremendous school year for Brewster Athletics, and it has been a great Spring season overall. With 11 teams competing interscholastically this term, we have been competitive and displayed exceptional sportsmanship and character throughout the spring season—no matter the weather or uncontrollable circumstances presented.”
Reflection from Coach Varga-Wells
Crew Coach Katy Varga-Wells shared a personal reflection at the Awards ceremony, once that garnered nods from many of her fellow coaches: ”When I was growing up, my mother, who is almost entirely made up of fierce-just-outside-of-Boston-always-running-on-Dunkin energy, was adamant about this ONE rule: no matter what, you will ALWAYS write thank you notes. Letters to teachers at the start of winter and summer vacations, cards to our grandparents who came to our really bad dance recitals, and notes of appreciation to aunts who gave ill-fitting sweaters as Christmas gifts. It was a practice that used to drive me crazy, felt forced and unnecessary. I had better things to do as a teenager...and yet, this something she still expects us to do, even as I stand up here at age 37…Hey, remember to send Mr. Hurley a thank you note for all of his advice this season, and Did you tell your sister thank you for surprising you on your birthday?! With age, I started to realize the importance of this small and touching gesture: upon opening, a simple thank you note has the power to completely alter the course of a recipient's day. It says, ‘I noticed’ and ‘What you did mattered.’
So today, I am going to try my best to share my ‘thank you card’ to our team. As coaches, we have the privilege of witnessing the remarkable growth that happens when young people challenge themselves. I am wrapping up my fourteenth year as a boarding school person, and it is no doubt that working in this program has been the highlight of my time at Brewster. It has reminded me daily that our work as rowing coaches is meaningful. Thank you, BA Crew.”
