Brewster Academy’s dress code is an expression of the school’s mission and Community Core Values. It is designed to celebrate belonging, learning, and self-discipline. The dress code allows for individual choice while maintaining a shared sense of community. Daily, students may elect either Class Day Dress or Spirit Dress (unless otherwise noted for special occasions).

At all times:

Clothing should allow the students to engage in the activity in which they are participating fully.

Clothing must not interfere with health or safety or contribute to a hostile environment, including any language or images depicting drugs, alcohol, violence, illegal activity, profanity, hate speech, or pornography.

All bodily private areas typically covered by undergarments must be covered by opaque clothing. Undergarments are not acceptable forms of outerwear.

During the class day and in the Dining Hall

A top must be worn that is opaque and covers the student’s front, back, and sides to the bottom garment.

A bottom must be worn that is opaque and covers the student’s front, back, and sides to the top garment and cover to the mid-thigh.

The top and bottom garments must meet or overlap.

Shoes intended for both indoor and outdoor use must be worn at all times.

Clothing should be clean.

Other Imperatives:

  • No hats, sunglasses, or headphones;
  • No non-Brewster hooded sweatshirts;
  • No blue jeans;
  • No sweatpants;
  • All clothing should be free of rips, tears, and holes.
  • Winter jackets should be removed in classrooms.
  • Students are expected to be neatly shaven.
  • Students may select from the following choices:


Class Day Dress

  • Pants/shorts/skirts/dresses in good condition;
  • Collared shirt (button down or polo), blouse, or turtleneck;
  • Sweaters;
  • Leggings/tights are to be worn only with a dress or skirt;
  • All clothing should be free of writing and should not promote inappropriate behavior.


Class Day Spirit Dress

(Official clothing that prominently displays Brewster's name or logos)

Pants/shorts/skirts;

An official Brewster Academy top with sleeves. Brewster-branded hooded sweatshirts are permitted, but the hood must not be worn when indoors.

There will be select times when students are asked to wear Formal Dress to engage with a specific school activity fully.  Examples of these include, but are not limited to, classroom presentations, meetings with campus visitors, schoolwide events,  academic award ceremonies, and community dinners.

Formal Dress

  • Option 1: Dress shirt and dress pants with blazer;
  • Option 2: Dress or skirt with blouse or sweater;
  • Option 3: Formal attire representing a student’s international and/or cultural identity.
