Alumna/us Athlete of the Month - Alpha Diallo '16

The turn of the calendar marks the New Year and the excitement of college basketball being in full swing. As in many winters, the Brewster faithful follow several Bobcat alums starring in basketball programs for colleges across the country. Alpha Diallo ’16 of Providence College in Rhode Island is a player everyone should pay attention to this season. Diallo, who is in his senior year for the Friars, is a four-year starter and among one of the best small forwards in the country. The New York City native has put together an impressive career and is hoping to save his best for last. As a freshman, Diallo was named Providence’s Defensive Player of the Year. In his sophomore season, he earned the team’s Most Improved Award, and last year Alpha eclipsed the 1,000-point mark, was recognized as the Friars’ Most Valuable Player, and earned 2nd team All-Big East honors. 

Prior to all his success at Providence, Diallo did a post-graduate year at Brewster, helping the Bobcats to a Lakes Region League title in 2015-2016, and was named to the conference’s all-star team and was a 2nd team All-NEPSAC selection. Brewster’s head coach, Jason Smith, is proud of Alpha and is not at all surprised at the success is having. 

“Alpha was one of the hardest working, most driven players we’ve had in our program,” noted Smith. “He is extremely versatile and a terrific scorer and rebounder and plays both ends of the floor. We are all very happy for him and enjoy following his career.”

Although very busy with managing the start of the season and his course load, Alpha took some time to connect with Bobcat Nation—noting he is grateful for the year he spent here.

Bobcat Nation: How did Brewster prepare you for life after high school?

Diallo: Brewster helped me navigate the rigors of college by giving me the necessary skills to adapt to the different situations that have come my way.

Bobcat Nation: What are your greatest memories of being a student-athlete at Brewster?

Diallo: While at Brewster I learned how to be a leader on my team as we tried to win games each night along with working with and living with people from all over the world. 

Bobcat Nation: Who were the teachers or coaches that had the greatest impact on you while at Brewster?

Diallo: Along with coach Smith, I would have to say Mr. Lui. He ran the dorm I lived in and he helped me and the others grow as young men and gave us guidance that left a lasting impression on us all.

Bobcat Nation: What has been your greatest accomplishment since leaving Brewster?

Diallo: Knowing that I will be graduating in a few months is definitely my greatest accomplishment, the one I am most proud of.

Bobcat Nation: Greatest moment playing in college?

Diallo: The best moment while playing at Providence has been the few times we have played in Madison Square Garden. Being a kid from New York City, I understand it is the Mecca of basketball, and to have played there in the Big East Tournament every year has been special.

Bobcat Nation: What are you looking forward to this season?

Diallo: I am hopeful that we can win the Big East and get selected for the NCAA Tournament and then make a deep run!

Bobcat Nation: Advice to the current Brewster students?

Diallo: I think it is important to build a network of people at Brewster. There are so many people there who can help you in the future, and those people can help you in your journey. Additionally, take time to meet people who are different from you. Step outside your comfort zone and take time to get to know people you don’t play on teams with or are in your dorm. The school is unique and there are a lot of great people on that campus—enjoy it!

Bobcat Nation: Major and plans after college?

Diallo: I am a finance major and can do a lot with that degree. However, right now, my goal is to have a strong season and hopefully have a career in the NBA!
